Most Christians understand that our faith involves the supernatural but how many have actually looked at how much the bible talks about what Dr. Michael Heiser called The Unseen Realm?
I studied the Bible at a private Christian University but my learning did not end there. Eventually, I came across the work of Dr. Heiser and I have to be honest, it was shocking and a lot to digest. In fact, when I read his book, The Unseen Realm, I could only read one chapter at a time because it was like drinking water from a fire hose. I have done extensive independent studies on the violence in the Old Testament. That is one of the objections you will hear to Christianity by skeptics and it was once an issue I wrestled with before coming to Christ. Therefore, Dr. Heiser’s work was the first that really challenged my thinking about how I was viewing the Old Testament. After reading this book I started to re-read the bible because I felt like I had been cheated out of valuable information about the Bible. No pastor or professor had ever talked about these things. I had to re-read the Bible because I was given so much more information than I ever got at college and things became a lot more clearer.
As Dr. Heiser points out in his book there are hundreds of verses that don’t make sense without knowing about The Unseen Realm. Just how many you may be wondering, 343 verses is the grand total. That’s a lot of verses we could be missing out on if we aren’t properly understanding the context and proper meaning.
For those who are interested, here is that list. I highly suggest you look into these verses for yourself once you have read through Dr. Heiser’s book. I prefer looking at the ESV and I recommend you look at this version as well to get the big picture view. I will be writing on several of these verses in the future.
